Background of the Study
Bilingual speech fluency is a key indicator of effective language acquisition and communication. In Nigerian urban communities, where diverse linguistic groups converge, bilingual individuals often exhibit varying levels of speech fluency. Urban centers provide an environment rich in linguistic interactions, where residents frequently switch between indigenous languages and English. This dynamic linguistic landscape contributes to the development of fluency, yet challenges remain due to factors such as language interference, code-switching, and social pressures (Chinwe, 2023). Research indicates that consistent exposure to varied linguistic inputs and regular communication in both languages can enhance speech fluency (Ifeoma, 2024). However, urbanization and rapid modernization may also lead to the marginalization of indigenous languages, affecting overall bilingual fluency. This study investigates the factors influencing bilingual speech fluency among Nigerian urban dwellers, examining the role of social networks, educational practices, and media exposure in shaping fluency levels (Olukoya, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential for high bilingual speech fluency in urban settings, many Nigerian urban residents experience challenges in maintaining balanced fluency. Issues such as language interference and inconsistent language practices contribute to variable proficiency levels (Chinwe, 2023). Urban environments often favor the dominant language, resulting in reduced practice and fluency in indigenous languages (Ifeoma, 2024). The lack of systematic studies on these factors hampers efforts to design interventions that support balanced bilingual communication. This study aims to identify the key determinants of speech fluency in bilingual urban communities and to propose strategies to enhance overall communication proficiency (Olukoya, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess bilingual speech fluency in urban Nigerian communities.
To identify factors affecting fluency in both indigenous and global languages.
To recommend strategies for improving balanced speech fluency.
Research Questions:
What are the levels of bilingual speech fluency in urban areas?
What factors contribute to speech fluency or hinder it?
What interventions can enhance bilingual communication?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the dynamics of bilingual speech fluency in Nigerian urban communities. Its findings will aid in the development of interventions to promote balanced language proficiency, contributing to improved social and professional communication (Chinwe, 2023; Olukoya, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining bilingual speech fluency in Nigerian urban centers and does not extend to rural or semi-urban areas.
Definitions of Terms:
Bilingual Speech Fluency: The ability to communicate smoothly in two languages.
Urban Communities: Densely populated city environments.
Language Interference: The influence of one language on another during speech.
